Water from cleaning or a spill gets into the switch behind the knob, and the igniter keeps clicking.
A worn switch stays closed after you let go of the knob, so the sparking does not stop.
If the cap sits off center, the flame does not reach the igniter properly and the stove keeps trying to relight.
Quick check: Turn off the burner, make sure the cap sits flat and centered, and let the cooktop dry for a few hours after cleaning.
